WEEK 10

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT:

Throughout the following projects of accessories, I continued the black and white theme contrasting with yellow and red. As colour was one of my main themes, I thought this was important to include when extending the main poster design. I feel that I kept everything consistent without changing bits in between creating the new pieces.

Firstly I made up 4 sticker/badge ideas backing the main body of the poster, producing a different element each time. I made them quite simple as the colours are bright and are definitely stand out designs. Then I went onto the 5 web page designs on an iPad format. I continued the same font so the pages would flow into another as you open the page up, which would appeal more to people viewing an art exhibition web page. Maintaining the key aesthetic, I produced the Facebook/Twitter header, extending the advertisement possibilities, and then onto a T-shirt too.

Taking heavy aesthetic inspiration from the famous scarface poster, repetition from Otl Aicher and pop art movement, I have created something to represent an Warhol art exhibition. I think that bringing all these elements together has turned out quite well to construct a modern advertisement. In the future, to make my project better I would include more texture to my work. At the moment it has some texture coming through from the effect I have applied to the model but maybe would have been more interesting if I included it somewhere else too.

WEEK 9

DEVELOPMENT:

As I have continued working on my project I have realised that my work is inspired a little bit by pop art, therefore, I have taken further inspiration from Andy Warhol and his use of effects. To edit my photos I used the 'curves' panel in Photoshop to create a similar effect.

Further Inspiration:

As I was researching further I had remembered a popular clothing brand, Supreme, had come out with a limited edition T-shirt (below), hoodie, beanie, etc, all inspired by the film Scarface's poster (shown above). This is a huge inspiration for me as I follow the brands releases of collaborations and it just so happens that this particular one will help aid me and boost my imagination.

MY PROJECT:

I didn't feel as if this version was any good as it didn't have something that majorly stood out. As a lot of my inspiration came from projects that were bright and used a lot of colour I feel like I wasn't achieving that by using the colours above.

Below is the first draft of my final project. I had played around with the colours to see what had a more eye capturing look and think the red and yellow stood out the most.

Second draft:
Third draft:

I personally feel that the 3rd draft worked the best with the colour scheme and the typography. Therefore, I went forward with this design to create the other factors of my project.

WEEK 8

 POSTER DESIGN:

To carry on from last week I took this photo of my flatmate and starting editing it, taking the background out. Then I took inspiration from Otl Aicher and inverted the photo which flattened the image and took away the depth.

Switching over to InDesign to create a different look using different colours. Also taking one of the main colours from Aicher's colour pallet.

After I was happy with the main subject I played around with the opacity and outline. Then went on on experiment with text.

PROJECT:

My final project will be advertisement for an Andy Warhol art exhibition as the main feature of my work has a pop art effect on the model and links well as he was one of the main artists throughout that movement.

WEEK 7

PROJECT IDEA:

All my work leading up to now has guided my ideas and views which has opened my mind to new opportunities. My plan for this project is to use fashion photography as a exhibition idea and then to use photographs I have taken / will take in relation to this subject. Regarding design ideas I have taken inspiration from various different designers such as Otl Aicher and stimulation from The Face magazine.

I intend to use black and white as a theme but also incorporate a splash of colour which would catch attention for a real poster. Blow is a selection of colours I may bring into practice. I have also been enjoying the look of a grainy vibe on photographs making them look vintage and old, but for now it is just a thought as I have yet to decide on a type front and I generally like to see how it looks together before fully deciding.

WORKSHOP:

Unfortunately, these photos didn't work for my design as the background blended with the foreground, where she's leaning on the playground equipment, therefore I will need to take new photographs with a plain background. I have booked the studio and camera to achieve this and have a model willing to help me out too. The use of a Wacom tablet helped me create an outline though, which I will use again once I have taken new photos.

From Making is Creating - Chapter 5
  • Happiness studies - Money is a typical thought when it comes to thinking about how to be more happy. Through the media in the 60's, celebrities would advertise the fact of not needing money to be happy which is a form of propaganda.
  • 'If an individual became rich, they would only be happier if their position was reasonably unique, if everyone became much better-off, they wouldn't become much happier.'
  •  I find the fact of people moving in and out of California very interesting as it'd such a popular place and everyone knows it. It just goes to show how it's not everything everyone always wants and there's no happiness in that.
  • When you really look at happiness you realise that it's not about the materialistic things in life, it's about how your mental self is holding up. 'It seems that happiness, regardless of other factors, means you live longer.'
  • Family relationships, financial situation, work, community and friends, health, personal freedom and personal values are the 'Big Seven factors affecting happiness' by Richard Laynard.
  • Family, community and well-being are the most important things to achieve happiness in the end, "A society cannot flourish without some sense of shared purpose. The current pursuit of self-realisation will not work. If your sole duty is to achieve the best for yourself, life becomes just too stressful, too lonely - you are set up to fail. Instead, you need to feel you exist for something larger, and that very thought takes off some of the pressure." Richard Laynard.

WEEK 6

WORKSHOP:

- The presentation subjects this week didn't appeal to me as they didn't suit my style or go with my main ideas, therefore didn't feel the need to include them or any research into them this week.

PHOTOGRAPHS:

Photos I've taken -

These photos were originally taken for a different project but I think they could work well for the idea I want to go with which does feature a model as the main subject.

READING:

The Meaning of Making: Chapter 4 -
  • 'The early terms used to characterize the internet,
such as 'virtual reality' and 'cyberculture', underlined
the notion that this activity is ethereal and not 'real'.'
  • Cyberculture - 'the social conditions brought about by the widespread use of computer networks for communication, entertainment, and business.'  https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/cyberculture
  • Explaining the importance of design, Gauntlett talks about YouTube and how it has grown from being a small website into a big web platform.
  • Ruskin 'the vivid expression of the intellectual life which has been concerned in their production' - he says that although a smart, well-produced project is nice to get, its not the most important thing.

POSTER INSPIRATION:

Film poster design from the 50s -

I like the half and half look of the black and white posters, this was an extreme stand out idea especially at this time in the 1950s. America started up the civil rights movement who spoke out about inequality and injustice. The designers of these type of posters realised what would catch peoples attention and intrigue all audiences, which became a popular theme throughout the 50s. To bring my own swing to this idea, I would add a bright pop of colour which also attracts the eye.

PRESENTATIONS :

Otl Aicher -

' The result of several years of work, the graphics were developed on a strict grid system, solely used the typeface Univers and were created from a bright palette developed from the colors of the Bavarian countryside. He was a very proficient typographer and created the Rotis family of typefaces, which include sans-serif, semi-sans, serif and semi-serif iterations. The typefaces were named after the property where he lived and worked from 1972 until his death in 1991.'

Graphic Design: The New Basics

Time and Motion
  • Time and motion are important in graphic design work because its a way to represent the movement of our bodies. These two factors go hand in hand as 'motion is a kind of change, and change takes place in time'.
  • It's like reading a book, you read it from left to right therefore looking at something visual you want to read it in flow the same way you read a book. This is the motion of following design work.
  • 'A word or design element can stay still while the environment around it changes.'
  • In film, elements such as composition, colour, scale and other principles are important as they change over time. Motion designers are in charge of this.
  • Cropping an image can show motion and movement, 'an image that is partly cut off appears to be moving into or out of the frame.'
  • 'Animation uses sequences of still images to create the optical illusion of movement.'
Rules and Randomness
  • Designers make rules like magazines designers use grids and typography. 'Rules create a framework for design without determining the end results.'
  • 1920s - Laszlo Moholy–Nagy, Bauhaus artist and designer created a painting by giving a sign painter a set of instructions through a telephone call.
  • 1960s - Sol LeWitt created drawings based on simple instructions.
  • Reapeat and rotate.

WEEK 4

READING

Graphic Design: The New Basics

Modularity, Grid, Pattern, Diagram

  • 'A module is a fixed element used within a larger system or structure.'
  • Even with a plain piece of ordinary paper, the book shows you can still create an exciting, dramatic effect.
  • 'Typography is mostly an act of dividing a limited surface' Willi Baumeister
  • Grids are important to achieve symmetrical and unsymmetrical content. There are different types of grids which I have demonstrated in week 1 and 2's homework, such as page grids, broken grids, calendar grids etc.
  • 'Surface pattern is creating a vibrant discourse'
  • All patterns come from isolated elements (dots), linear elements (stripes) and the criss-crossing elements (grids).

HOMEWORK

1) One of the posters I find inspiring by its colours and shapes. I also quite like the typography but I think for my project I want bold text.

Below I tried copying an album cover by Peter Saville, I think it turned out alright but I could improve on adding the shading and text. I personally don't like the colours as they are quite clashing and a bit uncomfortable to look at.
