WEEK 3

READING:

Graphic Design: The New Basics :

Figure/Ground, Framing, Hierarchy, Layers, Transparency

  • Interwoven space (figure inside a figure), reveals another subject at second glance.
  • Frames are important as they affect how we perceive information. Cropping alters its original shape, changing the scale of elements in relation to its overall picture. New frame, new meaning.
  • Margins, bleeds, borders all affect our view on the main subject and I hadn't realised how important they were to consider when it came to graphic design.
  • Layers to me mean endless possibilities and it a great way to spice things up in designing. Cut and paste, printing, mixing. All can be applied to different aspects such as data layers, audio layers, typographic layers, etc.
  • 'Transparency can be used thematically to combine or contrast ideas, linking levels of content.'
  • Physical (water, ribbon), graphic (graphic elements, typography), digital etc..

WEEK 2

WORKSHOP:

- Helvetica, documentary.

PRESENTATIONS:

1) Modernism, The Bauhaus & Maholy Nagy - I personally like the simplicity of shapes and the interesting typography. The colours are also quite aesthetic but can clash like in the last picture. I know I prefer brighter colours that are more out there rather than the neutral look so I won't be taking inspiration from that aspect of Bauhaus.

2) Late Modernism & Saul Bass, poster and title design - I like the use of colours and lines which produces a strange visual but quite pleasing to the eye and arty.

  • Basic Colour Theory by Sir Isaac Newton - Two colours sitting opposite each other on the wheel are compliments. 'Deciding to use analogous or contrasting colours affects the visual energy and mood of any composition.'

READING:

Graphic Design: The New Basics

The first three chapters of this book introduce graphic design as a whole, the history (Bauhaus, Albers and Moholy-Nagy), the concepts behind it, and how its come through to this day and age. I thought this was a helpful introduction and insight as I knew near to nothing about graphic design. Although, I did get the chance to go to the Bauhaus Museum in Germany for an art trip back at school, it was interesting to read further into the history of it. The book goes on explaining the different elements of graphic design and how to create some engaging art; including titles such as, texture, rhythm and balance, pattern, transparency, etc.
